There’s something magical about the Hotel Del Coronado during the holiday’s, where the beauty of the coastline coexists with luxury holiday spirt. We booked our room at the Del months in advance for New Years Eve and when we heard the weather report we were prepared to stay in all night and listen to the storm. The rain that pounded the county the day before – and even brought snow to sunny San Diego didn’t resurface for New Years Eve.  Since I live in San Diego county I’ve experienced many day trips to Coronado and the Hotel Del, riding bikes, walking along the beach, or having dinner and drinks. Finally, I decided to STAY at the Del. Here is how I made this New year celebration at this luxury resort affordable.

1. We booked the hotel room months in advance, paid in advance, used AAA to get a further discount, and got a Catalina Cabana room – on the ground floor in front of the beach. This room gave us discount parking at the Del to $15 instead of $39.

2. We had our big NYE meal at Vigilucci’s near the Del – (late lunch at 2pm) for 1/3 the cost of a fancy dinner – and we had the restaurant nearly to ourselves.

3. Our dinner reservations (at the Del) were at Evo Pizzeria and Wine Bar where we had delicious artisan pizza. We knew we were at a luxury resort when we saw a couple wearing spa robes, with dripping wet hair fresh out of the jacuzzi, watching the sunset right in front of our restaurant.

4. For dessert, we went to the Del’s Babcock & Story shop for delicious chocolate truffles. It was tempting but too cold to have ice cream at the MooTime Creamery.

5. After dinner, we sat at the Sunset Bar, by a warm fire pit and heater, to have a drink and watch the ice skaters.

6. The rooms have small refrigerators, so we brought sparkling cider and champagne to toast the new year privately in our room.

7. We splurged on room service though for breakfast and ordered one big breakfast to share with pancakes, eggs, bacon, toast, hash browns, and the traditional American Breakfast that includes pastries coffee and juice.

So where to go for next years NYE?
